Spring cleaning: how to do it the right way
Spring cleaning is a long-time tradition for many and for a good reason, it’s a fantastic time to give your home a makeover. If you’re going to do something, then you might as well do it right, so before you set yourself to cleaning out your home this spring, make sure you have a gameplan:
1. Make a plan
Sit down and decide what you’d like to get done with your spring-cleaning mission. You’re going to need to create a plan of action and a list of priorities. You may decide that you want to do a deep cleaning, or maybe that’s not so important to you. Whatever you decide, make sure your goals are realistic so that you don’t end up overwhelmed.
2. Get your supplies
Once you have your goals, take the time to find anything you’ll need to get that done. If you’re donating you may need some bins, if you’re doing a deep clean you may need cleaning supplies or tools, spring is a great time to steam your carpets, for example, so make sure you put the time into thorough planning.
3. Work from high to low
Most of us have made this mistake at some point, you start off cleaning the floors and baseboards, and work your way up the walls before ending with the hard-to-reach areas. Having finished your task, you take a breather, only to notice that the floor is covered in dust and debris. Make sure you clean from high to low and you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches.
4. Now’s the time to clean outside
Now that the weather is getting better, it’s a great time to start doing some outdoor chores. There is often a lot of work to do outside after the long winter months, but it doesn’t have to be a chore. Working on the outside of your home can be a great way to embrace the coming of spring and shake off any lingering winter cobwebs.
5. Do some thoughtful donations
During the course of your cleaning, you’ve probably discovered plenty of items that just don’t make sense in your home anymore. There’s no time better than spring to create some space in your home via donation. This is the perfect opportunity to improve your home while also giving back to your community. It’s a feel-good experience that can rejuvenate your home and your sense of well-being at the same time.
Time to look outward
Now that you’re happy with the look and feel of your home, it’s time to get back out into the world. It’s all too common to feel a little stir crazy at the end of the winter, especially if you’re not one for winter sports. So now that things are starting to open up again it’s a great time to consider what you want to do with the warm months. There are endless options to choose from, but we will discuss some of the most common, or some that you may not have been able to do for a while.
• Consider a garden
A garden can be a great way to spend some happy hours outside and can provide delicious fresh produce for your home. You may have the room for this in your yard which is ideal, but if not then be sure to check for community garden projects in your area. They’re very common and a great way to make friends with a similar hobby.
• Spend some time outdoors
If you have any outdoor hobbies now is the perfect time to get back to them. It’s a great time to get out for a walk or run, or even grab your bike. Odds are there are some great trails near you, and if not then now is the time to get out and find some. Spending time in the outdoors can be energizing and is a great way to shake off the winter blues.
• Start planning for the summer
Summer is always an exciting time, and the best time to plan for summer is in the spring. Take some time to think about events that bring you joy. Whether that’s camping in the backwoods, hitting up some summer concerts, or just a road trip with friends or family, it’s important to make the most of the nice weather.
